Frazsiers Whip, Cavalier on brink of JWPL final
Defending champions Frazsiers Whip FC and Cavalier FC will take big leads into the second leg semi-finals of the Jamaica Women’s Premier League against Los Perfectos FC and Arnett Gardens FC, respectively, at the Constant Spring football field on Saturday.
Cavalier, who stunned Arnett Gardens FC 4-0 in the first leg at the same venue a week ago, hope to secure their final spot in the opening game set to start at 4:00 pm.
It was the most goals that Arnett Gardens FC had conceded in any game this season after letting in only 16 goals in the 20-game regular season. Only Frazsiers Whip FC, who allowed nine goals, conceded fewer in the regular season.
Frazsiers Whip FC will take a massive 5-0 lead into the second game against Los Perfectos which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm.
The winners on aggregate will qualify for next weekend’s final set for Jamaica College’s Ashenheim Stadium.
Despite comfortable first-leg leads, neither Frazsiers Whip FC nor Cavalier SC is taking anything for granted. Both teams’ head coaches said last weekend they will be going into the second-leg games, focused and ready to play hard.
Cavalier were beating Arnett Gardens FC for the first time all season after both regular season games had ended in 2-2. The Cavalier camp will be hoping that captain Kersha Thomas will be fit to start the game after she had to be subbed off last week due to an injury.
Arnett Gardens will rest hopes on the return of captain Anna-Kay Richards, who missed last weekend’s game with an injury. They will expect Shikira Douglas and Tuanashae Hamilton, who have combined for 49 of their 95 goals in the regular season, to lead a potential comeback.
Shanel Spence, who bagged a brace in the first game to bring her season total to 35 goals, will be key for Cavalier. Her teammates Deshanna Cole and Kersha Thomas, who have both scored in double digits, will also be expected to be on the hunt for goals.
Frazsiers Whip, the only team with an unbeaten record in the competition, could have an easier path to the final.
The result last week was Frazsiers Whip’s third win over the Mandeville-based Los Perfectos FC. The prior victories were 7-1 and 2-0 in the regular season.
They will be without the impressive Shaneil Buckley who returned to her United States school team Daytona State College for the start of their season.
But Frazsiers Whip FC will have the dependable Davia Richards who leads all scorers with 42 goals, including a first-half brace in the first leg. The team also features Destiny Powell, who has scored 24 times, and captain Nevillegail Able, who also has 12 goals under her belt.
