Cavalier take spot in JWPL final
Cavalier FC remains on course for the national double after booking their place in the final of the Jamaica Women’s Premier League competition with a 0-0 draw with Arnett Gardens in their second-leg contest at the Constant Spring Sports Complex on Saturday.
Cavalier, who are the reigning Jamaica Premier League champions, won the tie 4-0 on aggregate after their commanding victory over Arnett Gardens a week ago.
Cavalier Head Coach Everdean Scarlett says he is proud of his team’s performance and that they are now looking forward to the final of the competition.
“This is a great feeling, because any team would want to be in the final, and we are just trying to create some history this year,” he says. “Our senior men’s team won the Jamaica Premier League, and our females are looking to bring home this trophy as well.
“We are definitely going for this title, and we want to win it. I think this is a trophy that is missing from the club, so the ladies are and I am ready for us to go out there and get the job done.”
Cavalier’s goalkeeper Ornella Lindsay, who was named player of the match, was outstanding between the sticks as she made a number of brilliant saves in the first half to keep Arnett Gardens off the scoresheet.
Cavalier also created several clear-cut opportunities in the first period, but faulty shooting from their attackers let them down.
Arnett Gardens, who started the match with a four-goal deficit, had no choice but to throw everything at their opponents. However, they were kept at bay due to excellent goalkeeping from Lindsay as well as solid defending from central defenders Aisa Lee, Shanique Smith, and Tamara O’Sullivan.
Abigail Mullings, Suen Gregory, and Tasheka Reid were guilty of missing chances for Arnett throughout the match.
Despite his team’s failure to advance to the final, Arnett Gardens’ Assistant Coach Richard Jarrett says he is proud of his players’ efforts.
“The instruction was to come out here and leave everything on the pitch and not looking at the scoreline, and we fought very hard and I am super proud of the girls,” he says.
“I think we had an up-and-down season, but we really pulled together as a team and showed the strength that Arnett Gardens is known for. We just fought back and we finished third in the league, and that is a great accomplishment for me and the entire management team.”
