Errol Simmonds: The Orchid Whisperer (Part 2)
Style Observer Gardening (SOG) continues its trek through businessman Errol Simmonds’ garden in Constant Spring, a haven for his array of orchids and garden-to-table produce. Simmonds’ devotion to his orchids radiates, so much so that he lovingly calls them his children. His meticulous care is a testament to his pride. For aspiring gardeners who want similar success, he imparts a crucial lesson: Exceptional results stem only from relentless passion, enduring patience, and steadfast consistency, not quick fixes.
“One must love gardening,” Simmonds advised. “I tell my friends, from time to time, that I am not interested in helping them if they don’t have the will to learn, love and be patient.”
For those willing to do the work, Simmonds suggests starting with dendrobiums, which are easier to manage. However, he cautions that the challenge lies in figuring out what treatment works best.
“It depends on your environment because some orchids will not survive in certain areas. Overwatering can be a problem and not enough water can [also] be a problem. That’s why it’s important to learn everything about the particular orchid that you have,” Simmonds explained.
