Taxpayer’s double payment dilemma
TAJ calls for paperwork to correct oversight
Dear Claudienne,
I was informed by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) that I had not paid taxes for 2015, so I went ahead and repaid. I now have copies of the receipts showing I paid twice for the same year. I contacted the TAJ call centre, but they say I have to deal with the matter in person at the downtown Kingston office. However, since I’m overseas, I’m unable to do so. Can you assist me with getting this resolved?
JJ
Dear JJ,
The Chief Corporate Communications Officer at Tax Administration Jamaica Corporate Office has sent the following email to
Tell Claudienne in respect of your concerns.
“The matter was referred to our team at the Kingston Revenue Service, who investigated and provided the following response: In relation to the captioned matter, our records confirm that payments were made twice for the 2015-2016 tax period. As such, a refund will need to be processed.
To facilitate this, the following documents will need to be submitted.
· Original receipt for the duplicate payment
· Valid identification – certified copy
· Proof of bank information
· A signed letter outlining the issue
· Completed Client Information Form, which is available on our website (attached for ease of reference)
Once the required documents are received, the matter will be processed accordingly.
We apologise for this oversight and will adjust as soon as possible.”
You have told Tell Claudienne that you should be able to provide the requirements, except the original receipt. As you are overseas, you were sent an electronic copy of the original receipt, you explained. As you cannot produce the original receipt, please check with the Chief Corporate Communications Officer for an exception to be made.
We wish you all the best.
