Frazsiers Whip coach pleased with tune-up for JWPL final
Frazsiers Whip FC Head Coach Courtney Dowdie is confident the team can retain its Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) title after booking a spot in the final.
The defending champions beat Los Perfectos 2-1 in their second leg semi-final on Saturday at the Constant Spring football field to advance 7-1 on aggregate.
Goals from Reggae Girlz Destiny Powell and Davia Richards finished the job for Frazsiers Whip, while Venecia Reid got the consolation for Los Perfectos.
Despite making several changes to the team on Saturday, Dowdie was pleased with his team’s efforts.
“We had one foot in the final from the first leg so we focused on squad rotation because most of the girls will be leaving to take up their scholarships shortly. It was a heavy rotation but I think the girls played well,” he said.
In final set for August 9 at Jamaica College, they are set to meet Cavalier FC who got the better of Arnett Gardens 4-0 on aggregate despite a goalless draw on Saturday.
Dowdie says he’s looking to spoil Cavalier’s party as they seek to do a double across both genders.
“Our aim is definitely to stop them from winning, we can’t have them winning the men’s and women’s premier league in the same year. Apart from meeting them twice in the season, we know what to expect and once we can bring our A game on the day, we can do well,” he said.
Los Perfectos Coach Ricardo Martin says he’s satisfied with the team despite missing out on the final.
“To see the girls come out and continue to work, I mean I have to be proud of them. It’s been eight years out of the competition and to be back here in the semi-finals, hats off to them. Our goal was met when we qualified for the semifinals because that was our aim from the start of the season,” he said.
Los Perfectos and Arnett Gardens are to play in the third-place play-off on Saturday, also at Jamaica College.
