Campbell promises major developments for Westmoreland Eastern
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — Intent on convincing voters that the People’s National Party (PNP) thinks about them even when an election is not looming, the party’s General Secretary Dr Dayton Campbell has promised to provide one constituency with a mobile clinic.
“I know that when election time comes, we run guh around and we take everybody out of their yard. We take sick, lame and everybody out of their yard and we carry dem guh vote,” Dr Campbell told Comrades during the party’s Westmoreland meeting in Independence Park, Savanna-la-Mar, last Saturday.
“And then some of the times, enough is not done to check on them between election to the next election. So, I am going to purchase an ambulance for Eastern Westmoreland, and call it the Eastern Westmoreland Mobile Clinic that we will drive from community to community to check on the persons in there. Make sure we can write them prescription, sign them up to NHF (National Health Fund) and make sure that we are caring about those who support us,” added Campbell, who is a medical doctor.
The mobile clinic was among a number of plans he outlined for Westmoreland Eastern during his address. Others addressed issues related to firefighting, policing, the postal agency, and sporting facilities.
According to Dr Campbell, under a PNP Administration at least one fire station will be added to Westmoreland Eastern. There are currently two fire stations in the parish — one in Negril which is in Westmoreland Western and the other in Savanna-la-Mar, in Westmoreland Central.
“Can you imagine that if there’s a fire you can’t get one fire truck come from Bethel Town? You don’t have a fire truck in Darliston. You don’t have any fire truck in Leamington. You don’t have a fire truck in the Whitehouse Division. Under the next PNP Government there must be a fire station in the constituency of Eastern Westmoreland,” he argued.
Dr Campbell also alleged that Darliston Police Station is in disrepair.
“The police dem up ah Darliston almost a drop through the floor. To how the police station stays dem almost ah drop through the floor. Time come now for us to pay attention to how we treat those who put their lives at risk to protect us every day. Under our Government, we are going to ensure that the police can live and work in dignity,” he vowed.
Dr Campbell also told supporters that he recently received a phone call from Councillor Jerome Bachus (PNP, Darliston Division), who informed him that plans are afoot to close Darliston Post Office, which would mean users have to travel approximately 23 kilometres or 15 miles to the Savanna-la-Mar Post Office in the capital town.
“Wi nuh into dem something deh. We build them for people to go and use the services of the post office. And so, we want to ensure that we can restore the post office in Darliston so that it can be of use to the people of the community,” stated Dr Campbell.
Turning his attention to the social services provided, he said there was a lot of work to be done.
“How can you have an MP that don’t build not even one community centre? We don’t have any sporting competition going on. We will ensure that in each division there is one playing facility that is properly developed. At Bog, we are going to make that into a mini-stadium with lights so we can play our competition in the night,” said Dr Campbell.
He spoke of the economic benefits he expects to follow.
“Those who do hair ah guh mek some money. Those who are barbers ah go mek money because yuh have to look sharp when you are going out in the night. Those who are selling clothes have to look good. Those who are selling pan chicken ah guh come out come sell it, and so it will cause economic activity within the community. We are going to restore the youth and community development in the constituency,” added Dr Campbell.
