Midwife ‘Indi’ launches début dancehall single
TWENTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD Shanice Barham knew from a very tender age that she wanted to enter the music business as a singer, but was daunted by fear.
However, Barham, who is a midwife at Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Kingston, managed to muster up the courage to overcome that fear in January and decided that it was time for the world to hear and appreciate her beautiful voice.
She took unto herself, the stage name Indi and, on Sunday released her very first single entitled It’s a Vibe.
The début song, which was accompanied by a bubbly music video, was premièred on YouTube.
“I always had a passion for health and singing from a younger age. That was how I got into the health field. I also always knew that I could sing. From a young age, when I am around my family I was always singing. I knew I wanted to sing professionally, but I didn’t know how it would go. I am so grateful for the opportunity to start pursuing what I always wanted to do,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
Through management company Xion House Music Group, Indi has very strong support. Her team consists of Norman Neil, who is based in the United Kingdom; Joseph “Joey Lyric” Dyke, who is based in Los Angeles, USA; and Tjay Davis in Jamaica.
“I really just want to get my song across to all areas that it can get to. I want to spread the vibe, share the love, and share the positive energy. That is what this song brings. Sometimes life is too serious and you want to relax, listen to some music, and just vibe.
“It was written by Joey and myself, she shared.” We were testing out some ideas for a song and this one stuck. We thought that dancehall is oversaturated with lewd lyrics. Once we put it on the table and we began playing around with it, we loved it instantly, because it was something new and fresh. I like unique things. The song is dancehall with a difference, mainly focusing on enjoying yourself and vibing and getting into that mood, especially around this time, summer time.”
The song was recorded at Big Yard studio in St Andrew and her first official recording session was smooth and easy.
“This is the beginning and we have a lot more to come. I am coming with different things, different energy and flavours, but still dancehall,” the artiste said.
Neil shared that he has known Indi for over a decade. He told the Observer that ever since he met her in Grant’s Pen, St Andrew, where she grew up, the former student of Merl Grove High School was always singing.
He explained that she had expressed interest in wanting to enter the music industry since she was a teenager, but he encouraged her to get an education first. Fast-forward to 2025, he found himself starting Xion House Music Group as a vehicle to propel Indi’s music career.
“I told her to focus on her school work, get through school, and things will work out. She did a Rihanna cover some time ago and I said she is too talented to go to waste,” he said.
He went on to share how it all came together.
“I have a cousin who is in the music space in the UK. I reached out to her and she connected me with Joey in LA. Joey works with a whole lot of people and writes nuff songs for them. He builds beats as well. I sent him two cover songs she did and one of her personal songs. He said she was talented and that he would work with her and the rest is history,” Neil said.
Indi’s work can be viewed on social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok, under the Indi Muzik handle. Her YouTube page can be found under the name Indi Vevo.
