Talks in progress for Jamaica to rejoin Caribbean Premier League
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica looks set to return to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) next year, as talks with potential new owners and the Jamaican government have been progressing.
CPL Chief Executive Officer Pete Russell exclusively told Observer Online that “2026 is a realistic target” following the franchise’s two-year absence from the regional T20 showpiece.
Three-time champions Jamaica Tallawahs were replaced by the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons in 2024 after owner Kris Persaud grew frustrated with the lack of government support and sold the franchise back to CPL.
However, Sabina Park could once again be a host for CPL matches as Russell says there is high demand in the Jamaican franchise. Observer Online understands that an Indian Premier League (IPL) ownership group is one of the frontrunners.
Russell also revealed that talks have been productive with the government in ensuring the franchise would receive the necessary support in its return.
Russell, though, says a decision isn’t imminent as it is “still a work in progress”.
The Jamaica Tallawahs won the CPL in 2013, 2016 and 2022.
