God’s perfect timing sets foundation for Okeil Francis’s construction dreams
IN a world in which dreams often clash with financial limitations, Okeil Francis stands as a shining testament to perseverance, prayer, and purpose.
A 23-year-old fourth-year University of Technology student pursuing a degree in construction management, Francis is one of the recipients of the National Housing Trust’s (NHT) construction scholarship — a life-changing initiative offering up to $1 million in funding for students passionate about building Jamaica’s future.
Hailing from Hayes, Clarendon, Francis stated that this scholarship arrived as an answered prayer to ease financial burden.
“This support came at a time when I really needed it,” said Francis.
“It reminded me that God always provides. I’d sincerely like to extend great gratitude to the people behind this initiative for being an absolute blessing in my life, thank you,” added Francis.
Growing up wasn’t always easy for Francis, but his challenges only made him stronger. Raised with faith and fortified by family, he learned from an early age that resilience and belief in God could carry him through anything.
That same belief carried him through the intense workload and financial pressures of higher education and, just when he needed it most, the NHT scholarship gave him the boost to continue.
“To be honest, I just applied with good faith and then left it in God’s hands, because he will provide,” Francis recalled.
“When I got the news, I saw it as an answered prayer, which showed me that I do have a purpose,” added Francis.
From juggling multiple assignments to having to stay on top of demanding coursework plus privately managing emotional and financial constraints, Francis’s journey through university has demanded way more than academic commitment from him — it requires discipline, mental strength, and an unwavering vision.
“Yes, there were definitely times I felt overwhelmed. But my goals and the support from my parents and friends kept me going. I knew what I wanted, and I just kept working toward it. The heavy workload, multiple assignments, and financial struggles, they are hard to manage at times, but I try. I try to stay organised, I pray and ask my parents for help when I can’t do it alone. They have been a big support system for me.”
“It wasn’t always easy, but it taught me resilience and how to trust God through everything. I learned early on that faith can carry you through even the hardest times,” declared Francis who wants to contribute meaningfully to Jamaica’s built environment.
His long-term vision is rooted in service and impact — building infrastructure that uplifts communities and strengthens the country. For him construction is about progress, sustainability, and purpose, and not just concrete and steel.
“After I graduate, I want to give back through my work and help to improve the built environment in Jamaica,” said Francis.
To students facing similar struggles, Francis has a message filled with wisdom, faith, and lived experience.
“Don’t give up. Pray and trust God’s timing, and keep working hard. The struggle is a part of the journey, but with faith, all things are possible,” said Francis.
