Ricketts says Greenwood is ready
KINGSTON, Jamaica — President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Michael Ricketts, said Mason Greenwood is ready to represent the Reggae Boyz after obtaining his Jamaican passport and should be available for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.
“Greenwood’s documents have finally come through. He now has his citizenship and his Jamaican passport. Everything now is left up to him and, of course, the coach. I hope by now the coach would have had some discussions with him,” Ricketts told Observer Online.
“I mean, I would love for him to be ready for the September games. But like I said, that’s up to him and the coach. But, from our standpoint, he’s ready. All documentations have now been issued and are in his possession,” Ricketts reiterated.
The 23-year-old Greenwood represented England only once in 2022 before being sent home from the England camp after breaking COVID rules.
He ran into trouble but was cleared of attempting rape and assault charges, but fell out of favour with the English Football Association and new manager Thomas Tuchel, who informed Greenwood would not be part of his plans.
Jamaica has been waiting for Greenwood to finalise his switching of allegiance for a prolonged time, and it seems head coach Steve McClaren can now make him an official member of the Reggae Boyz.
Greenwood, who represented England at the Under-15, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21 levels, will join a long list of players born in England who play for Jamaica through their heritage.
