Wanted: Critical thinkers, not passive teachers
Dear Editor,
In many Jamaican schools outdated administrative practices continue to stifle progress. Some school leaders remain entrenched in archaic beliefs, resisting change to the detriment of both staff and students. This resistance often creates environments in which dynamic, forward-thinking teachers feel undervalued or unwelcome.
We are tasked with shaping students into critical thinkers — individuals who are assertive, self-aware, and capable of contributing meaningfully to society. Yet, ironically, the very qualities we strive to instil in students are discouraged in teachers. Assertive, outspoken educators — those who model critical thinking and advocacy — are too often seen as threats rather than assets. Instead, preference is given to those who are passive and subservient.
This contradiction not only undermines our education goals but also contributes to a revolving door of staff. While much attention is placed on teacher migration abroad, a significant number of vacancies arise from teachers transferring between local schools in search of healthier, more progressive environments.
Why, then, are we surprised when our best educators leave? Until we begin to value assertiveness, innovation, and professional voice in our teachers, we risk losing the very people best equipped to inspire the next generation of Jamaican citizens.
