Expect traffic changes in Kingston on Sunday as JLP, PNP hold meetings

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Expect major roadblocks and detours this weekend as the two main political parties, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People’s National Party (PNP), host their public meetings in Half-Way Tree and Cross Roads respectively.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has announced sweeping traffic changes that will affect key corridors in St Andrew from 11:00 am on Sunday, August 10 until 12:00 midnight on Monday, August 11.

Motorists are advised to expect major diversions in and around the Half-Way Tree Square due to the JLP’s public meeting.

Here are the key changes:

Motorists travelling along Constant Spring Road to Downtown Kingston will not have access beyond Constant Spring Road/South Avenue.

Alternate routes: Via left turn on South Avenue, right on to Waterloo Road, across Trafalgar Road to Holborn Road, Knutsford Boulevard, Lady Musgrave Road, and Old Hope Road, Oxford Road, Half-Way Tree Road and other areas.

Another option includes South Avenue to Burlington Avenue, Sandringham Avenue, Molynes Road, Woodglen Avenue, and Hagley Park Road.

Motorists travelling along Molynes Road towards Half-Way Tree will only be allowed to turn left onto Eastwood Park Road. There will be no access via South Odeon Avenue or Courtney Walsh Drive.

Alternate routes include Eastwood Park Road, right on Red Hills Road, right on Constant Spring Road and left on South Avenue, right on Waterloo Road and across Trafalgar Road.

Only left turn allowed onto Eastwood Park Road from Hagley Park Road towards Half- Way Tree.

Motorists will not be able to turn right on South Odeon Avenue nor right on Courtney Walsh Drive.

Alternate route: North along Eastwood Park Road, right on Red Hills Road, right on Constant Spring Road, left on South Avenue, right on Waterloo Road and across Trafalgar Road.

Half-Way Tree Road toward HWT Square:

Access available via Maxfield Avenue and Eastwood Park Road.

Alternate route: Turn right from HWT road on to Oxford Road, left on Knutsford Boulevard, left on Trafalgar Road, straight on to Waterloo Road, left on West Kings House Road and right on to Constant Spring Road.

Hope Road to Hagley Park Road:

No access past Hope Road/Winchester Road/Surbiton Road intersection.

Alternate route: Turn left on Winchester Road, right on Ruthven Road, left on HWT Road, right on Balmoral Avenue, right on Maxfield Avenue, left on Hagley Park Road straight across to Eastwood Park Road.

Parking for Half-Way Tree Meeting

Permitted:

Along Constant Spring Road (between South Avenue and Courtney Walsh Drive) – only on the western extreme lane.

Along Half-Way Tree Road (between Cargill Avenue and Holy Childhood High School).

Prohibited:

Beyond Courtney Walsh Drive and Holy Childhood High School.

On Hope Road, Hagley Park Road, Molynes Road, and Eastwood Park Road.

Significant traffic diversions will also be in place in and around Cross Roads for the PNP’s public meeting.

Half-Way Tree Road toward Downtown (via Cross Roads)

No access past Retirement Road.

Alternate route: Motorists will have to turn right on Retirement Road, left on Studio One Boulevard and access Slipe Road.

Downtown to Half-Way Tree via Orange Street

No access at Torrington Bridge.

Alternate routes:

Left at Torrington Bridge, right on Slipe Pen Road, left on Studio One Blvd, right on Retirement Road and left Half-Way Tree Road.

Or via West Heroes Circle to left North Heroes and left on Marescaux Road.

Old Hope Road to Cross Roads

No access beyond Old Hope/Eureka Road intersection.

Alternate routes:

To Downtown: Turn left on Tom Redcam Road, then left on Camp Road through South Camp Road, right on East Queen Street towards East Parade.

To Cross Roads: right on Eureka Road, left on Half-Way Tree Road, right on Retirement Road, left on Studio One Blvd through to Slipe Pen Road, left onto Orange Street, left on to King Street and into North Parade.

Marescaux Road to Cross Roads

No access at Caledonia Crescent.

Parking for Cross Roads Meeting

Permitted:

Slipe Road (south of Courts).

Left lane of Studio One Boulevard (western side only).

Left lane of Caledonia Crescent (facing north).

Off-roads from HWT Road north of HWT/Retirement Road.

Plazas and off-roads along Old Hope Road (east of Old Hope/Eureka Avenue).

Prohibited:

On Half-Way Tree Road and Old Hope Road.

On Caledonia Avenue leading to Slipe Road.

Motorists are urged to follow the directions of police officers on duty and plan their routes accordingly to avoid delays. The public is encouraged to comply with all parking regulations and detour signs to ensure safety and order throughout the events.
