Sizzla receives Key to the City of Lauderhill at Jamaica’s Independence celebration
Veteran reggae artiste Sizzla Kalonji, who is celebrating 30 years in the entertainment industry, was on Sunday presented with the Key to the City of Lauderhill, Florida, during a special ceremony at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Centre.
The Thank You Mama singer, who was recognised for his influence on global reggae music and his dedication to spreading positive messages rooted in strong cultural principles, also received a special citation from the United States (US) Congress, acknowledging his impact beyond music and his role as a cultural ambassador.
During his acceptance speech, Sizzla expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying the honour reflects his lifelong mission to uplift communities, promote spiritual growth and reconnect people of African descent with their roots.
“This is more than just an award. It’s a reminder that music can be a powerful tool for change and healing. Let me acknowledge the Most High, because nothing would have been possible without the Most High. Secondly, let me acknowledge all of the officials from the high offices of the City of Lauderhill. I’d like to say to the mayor, thanks for having us here,” said Sizzla Kalonji.
He added, “The City of Lauderhill, you’re very supportive to reggae and dancehall and the Caribbean. We say thank you very much. Jah bless you, peace and love.”
Mayor of the City of Lauderhill, Denise Grant, who was born in Jamaica, presented Sizzla with the key to the city, while Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus McCormick read the citation to Sizzla.
Said Grant, “We recognise you for all the work you’ve done in this global landscape in reggae.”
The event was part of Jamaica’s 63rd Independence celebrations and brought together a star-studded lineup, including Etana, Admiral Tibet, Lady G, Hal Anthony, and others. It was a vibrant celebration of Jamaica’s rich heritage and Lauderhill’s strong Caribbean community, highlighting the power of music to unite and inspire.
