Frazsiers Whip, Cavalier chase JWPL supremacy
Los Perfectos take on Arnett Gardens in third-place play-off
FRAZSIERS Whip FC will be seeking back-to-back Jamaica Women’s Premier League football titles when they meet Cavalier FC in this evening’s final set for 7:00 at Jamaica College.
The match-up features the top two sides throughout the regular season.
Frazsiers Whip and Cavalier are coming of impressive semi-final wins against Los Perfectos FC and Arnett Gardens FC, respectively. Los Perfectos and Arnett Gardens are scheduled to meet in the third-place play-offs at 4:00 pm.
Cavalier are chasing local national club football history as they look to become the first club to win both the men’s and women’s top-tier national club titles. Cavalier’s men won the Jamaica Premier League earlier this year.
Despite winning 2-1 and 6-2 in the two games between the teams during the regular season, Frazsiers Whip FC Head Coach Courtney Dowdie thinks the final will have it’s own set of hurdles to clear.
He said Cavalier is “one of the better teams” they had played in the lead-up to the final, and they will have to apply themselves.
“We are going to do our best to defend our title. We know Cavalier SC are coming hard,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
He added: “[Our chances] are very good but we can’t relax as anything can happen.”
Everdean Scarlett, the Cavalier coach, thinks if his players get their tactics right and keep focused they could upset the apple cart.
“I know my ladies can play well. If they stay focused, anything is possible, and we need a good all-round performance to be able to pull it off,” Scarlett told the Observer on Friday.
Cavalier’s confidence will be boosted after their 5-0 aggregate win over Arnett Gardens FC in the semi-finals. The coach said his players are in great spirits and looking forward to the final.
Cavalier finished second in the regular season, eight points behind Frazsiers Whip. But they have a confident goalscorer in Shanel Spence who could take the team on her shoulders.
Spence scored a double in their first-leg semi-final against Arnett Gardens, and she is expected to attract attention from the Frazsiers Whip defence.
If Frazsiers Whip FC manage to contain Spence, her teammates Deshanna Cole, Kersha Thomas, Tatyana Polack and Shadie Shirley could be asked to take up the slack.
Frazsiers Whip rode roughshod over the league during the regular season, scoring 133 goals in 20 games and conceding just nine. Their only blemish was a come-from-behind 1-1 result against Arnett Gardens.
That draw, however, could be used as a lesson as they never gave up and rallied late in time added to preserve their unbeaten run.
Davia Richards’ 42 goals were more than the totals of seven teams. The skillful player will carry the hopes of Frazsiers Whip in the final.
Midfielders Nevillegail Able and Shaneil Buckley have combined for 24 goals. They will also be hoping to play pivotal roles to help their team retain the title.
