Holness to announce general election date on Sunday
Prime Minister and Jamaica Labour Party Leader, Dr Andrew Holness has confirmed with the party’s Central Executive that he will announce the date of the next General Election during the party’s mass rally which is scheduled to take place on Sunday August 10, 2025 in Half Way Tree, St Andrew.
Holness gave the confirmation during a meeting of the Jamaica Labour Party’s Central Executive on Saturday.
The prime minister and party leader advised the party’s representatives to approach the electorate with humility and a commitment to continuing to work hard to improve more lives in Jamaica and to ensure that every Jamaican gets the opportunity to realise the vision of prosperity.
Holness also instructed representatives to ensure that they focus on working towards achieving solutions to issues facing their constituents as they seek election or re-election in various constituencies.
The party leader further advised the standard bearers to conduct their respective campaigns with dignity and with regard for the party’s established standards of decency, decorum and professionalism.
The JLP leader also reiterated that the party intends to continue conducting a campaign that is focused on speaking about its performance and commitment to deliver more policies and programmes which benefit the people of Jamaica.
He reiterated to the Central Executive that the party is committed to building on its work which he said includes stabilising the economy, presiding over a record of over 20-consecutive quarters of economic growth, implementation of no new taxes over eight years and delivery of a major decrease in the rate of violent crimes, including murder.
Holness also noted the record low unemployment rate and incidents of poverty.
The party leader also indicated that the JLP is committed to implementing additional policies and programmes which have been put in place to respond to cost of living challenges in Jamaica. Those initiatives include a revision of the income tax threshold, the solidarity programme and an over 150-percent increase in the minimum wage, he said.
The Central Executive on Saturday also fulfilled its constitutional requirement and formally confirmed as representatives all selected standard bearers in 63 constituencies in Jamaica.
The Central Executive is the Jamaica Labour Party’s second highest decision making body outside of its Annual Conference.
