Five good reasons every woman should visit her gynaecologist
LADIES, let’s talk. Between juggling work, relationships, motherhood, and everything in between, many of us put our health on the back burner. But here’s a gentle reminder: your reproductive health deserves priority, not just when something feels wrong, but as part of your regular wellness routine.
As a gynaecologist, I often say, “Don’t wait for symptoms to tell you something’s wrong. Prevention is power”. So whether you’re in your 20s or your 60s, here are five solid reasons why you should book that appointment:
1) The well-woman check: Your body’s annual tune-up
Think of it as your yearly service check, not just a pelvic exam. A well-woman visit is a full review of your reproductive and general health. We assess your menstrual cycle, breast health, blood pressure, weight, and screen for conditions like diabetes, thyroid issues, and hormonal imbalances. A detailed pelvic exam is conducted and topics such as contraception, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and sexually transmitted infection screening are discussed. Early detection of problems can save lives.
2) Period problems aren’t “normal”
Heavy bleeding, painful cramps, irregular cycles, or periods that suddenly go missing in action are all signals from your body. Many women suffer in silence, chalking it up to stress or “just how it is”. But issues like fibroids, endometriosis, endometrial polyps or polycystic ovary syndrome could be behind the scenes. Don’t normalise the abnormal.
3) Pap smears and HPV tests save lives
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers — if caught early. A Pap smear or HPV screening can detect pre-cancerous changes long before they become dangerous. These tests are simple, fast, and potentially life-saving. If you’re over 21 and haven’t had one recently, it’s time.
4) Protecting your fertility
Whether you’re actively trying to conceive or just thinking about future motherhood, your gynaecologist is your go-to guide. We assess ovarian reserve, screen for infections that can damage fertility, and help you understand your biological clock. Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to planning your family on your terms.
5) Sex, intimacy, and pelvic health matter too
Pain during sex, vaginal dryness, or decreased libido are not “just part of ageing”. These are valid concerns that affect quality of life. We’re here to listen, not judge. From hormonal support to pelvic floor therapy and surgical/non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation, there are solutions available. Your pleasure and comfort matter.
Ladies, your gynaecologist isn’t just here for babies and Pap smears. We’re your partners in lifelong wellness. Make the time. Ask the questions. Prioritise you. Because a healthy woman is an empowered woman.
