Vaz urges road safety during election season
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has issued a strong appeal to motorists, political leaders, and campaign organisers to prioritise road safety during the ongoing election season, following a spate of serious accidents linked to campaign-related travel.
In a release on Sunday, the minister expressed deep concern over the growing number of road accidents caused by reckless and careless driving during political motorcades, public meetings and other campaign events.
“[I am] urging, pleading, and begging all motorists that will be travelling and bringing supporters from both sides starting today throughout the election period. We have had too many accidents because of careless and reckless driving during the political activities,” the minister said.
Vaz voiced full support for the police’s zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations and called on party leadership at all levels – constituency, council, and national – to take responsibility for ensuring their supporters and contracted drivers follow the Road Traffic Act.
“There is too much loss of life and limb due to recklessness. I am once again pleading with the Jamaican people to be safe—not just on the roads, but in every aspect of this campaign. Let democracy shine,” the minister added.
