Frazsiers Whip set sights on JWPL dynasty
AFTER leading Frazsiers Whip FC to their third-consecutive Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) title, Head Coach Courtney Dowdie is quietly hoping to build a dynasty.
They made it three triumphs in a row when they dismissed Cavalier FC 4-1 at the Jamaica College football field on Saturday night.
National striker Davia Richards (12th, 53rd) and Destiny Powell (6th, 90+2) saw Frazsiers Whip notch their 22nd win from 23 games in a dominant season.
“That’s the plan. That’s definitely the plan, to see how best we can continue to win. It’s always good to win,” said Dowdie.
“We wanted it from before the start of the season and the aim was to defend our title — and I think we did that pretty well. All praises belong to the girls. They came out and they fought and I’m really, really happy,” Dowdie explained.
Despite the 4-1 winning margin and Cavalier competing with 10 players for the last 15 minutes, Dowdie said it was not easy as his players had to dig deep and deliver.
“It wasn’t a walk in the park because we knew that they were going to come and play aggressively. The aim was to see how best we could have a lot of combinations of play inside the middle third, and our girls knew and would just stick to the task ahead and we had to win,” he added.
Tamara O’Sullivan scored what turned out to be Cavalier’s lone goal in the 16th minute. Kadian Edwards of Cavalier was red-carded in the 75th minute.
Cavalier, after conceding two early goals, fought back and made the encounter an exciting one, and would have left with their heads high after holding their own against the Frazsiers Whip juggernaut.
“We always knew it was going to be an uphill task once we gave away two goals early. They came here tonight and they wanted it more than my team,” said Cavalier Head Coach Everdean Scarlett.
“I think we just have to go back to the drawing board and come back again stronger next season. We just have to go and find new talent and rebuild. We have a talented group, and it’s just unfortunate that we didn’t get any silverware,” he noted.
Frazsiers Whip walked away with a $300,000 cash prize as champions and another $35,000 for the Fair Play award, while Cavalier collected $200,000 as runners-up. Arnett Gardens, who defeated Los Perfectos 3-1 in the third-place clash on Saturday, received $100,000. Fourth-placed Los Perfectos pocketed $80,000.
Frazsiers Whip’s captain Davia Richards, who scored 45 goals from 23 games, won the Most Valuable Player and Golden Boots awards, collecting $20,000 for each; a KFC gift package; and a Hummel Ball. She also shared the SORA Celebration Award with Cavalier’s Shanel Spence, the two pocketing $5,000 each and a framed picture.
Frazsiers Whip’s Sajane Anderson won the Golden Glove and received $20,000, a Hummel Ball, a Powerade basket, and a gift certificate from Sherwin Williams.
