Power restored to customers, Bog Walk Gorge reopened after train derailment
KINGSTON, Jamaica —Jamaica Public Service (JPS) is reporting that normalcy has returned to customers who lost power due to Saturday’s train derailment, as well as to those impacted later by the damage to the backup system.
The utility company in a media release on Monday said all areas were restored Sunday night. The Bog Walk Gorge was also reopened to the public.
“On Saturday August 9, a Windalco train derailed in the Bog Walk Gorge, resulting in significant damage to JPS’ power transmission and distribution network. Several poles, spans of wire and other equipment were destroyed, causing outages in sections of St Catherine. Rain and lightning conditions yesterday (August 10), also impacted the rate of repair and restoration of supply to customers,” JPS said in its update.
It is understood that the train, which belongs to bauxite mining company Windalco, derailed at the entrance of the rail tunnel in the Bog Walk Gorge.
