Erroneous election date listed in proclamation from King’s House
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A proclamation from the Governor-General of Jamaica dissolving parliament and appointing the country’s election day was submitted on Monday, listing the country’s polling day incorrectly.
The proclamation and subsequent documents, seen by the Jamaica Observer, list the country’s election day as Thursday, September 3, 2025. It also indicated Parliament is to be dissolved on Friday, August 15.
“I, Patrick Linton Allen— do hereby appoint Thursday the 3rd day of September 2025, as the day upon which the poll for a general election of members of the House of Representatives shall be held,” the missive, signed and sealed on the 11th of August, said.
Election day is Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
The governor general, based on powers appointed to him/her in the Constitution and Representation of the People Act, is responsible for dissolving parliament and appointing the election day, on advice of the country’s prime minister.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the Wednesday, September 3, 2025, election date during a Jamaica Labour Party rally in Half Way Tree on Sunday, August 10, a day before the proclamation was sent out.
The incorrect day was also published on follow-up communication signed by the governor general’s secretary.
It is unclear whether this error will affect the election date.
