KINGSTON, Jamaica — With the annual back-to-school shopping spree underway as Jamaican students prepare to return to school in September, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has issued some tips to ensure a safe and successful shopping experience.

In a statement on Wednesday, the JCF advised families to:

1. Plan ahead and create a list: Before heading out, parents and children should collaborate to create a comprehensive list of all necessary school supplies, uniforms and other items. This prevents impulse purchases and ensures nothing is forgotten. Checking school requirements beforehand is crucial.
2. Set a budget and stick to it: Discuss and agree upon a realistic budget for back-to-school shopping. This helps manage expectations and prevents overspending. Encourage children to understand the value of money and make choices within the allocated budget.
3. Shop early to avoid crowds: Shopping areas can become extremely congested closer to the reopening of schools. Shopping early can help avoid the peak crowds, allowing for a more relaxed and safer experience. This also increases the likelihood of finding all desired items in stock.
4. Prioritise safety and security: Downtown areas, like any busy commercial hub, require heightened awareness. Parents should keep a close eye on their children, especially in crowded spaces; avoid displaying large sums of cash and be mindful of their surroundings. They should also consider shopping during daylight hours.
5. Dress comfortably and appropriately: Wear comfortable shoes and light clothing suitable for walking and navigating crowded streets. Avoid wearing expensive jewellery or carrying unnecessary valuables that could attract unwanted attention.
