Sports ministry allocates $1.5 million to national youth swimming team
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Sports Minister Olivia Grange has announced that her ministry has spent $1.5 million to enable the national youth team to participate in the Goodwill Swimming Championships in Barbados this weekend.
She made the announcement during a courtesy call by members of the team on Tuesday.
Minister Grange said the donation, through the Sports Development Foundation, is an investment in the young swimmers.
“We are sending off our swimmers to the Goodwill [Swimming Championships] and I thought it was important to give them financial support in order to prepare them adequately for the competition,” said Minister Grange.
The 40-member Jamaican delegation is scheduled to depart the island on Thursday for competition from Friday to Saturday. Minister Grange said she had “high hopes” for the team.
“They’re all young swimmers. They are the future stars and even at the tender age they are doing exceptionally well as swimmers and so we have to make sure that we nurture our sports men and our sports women from an early age so that they can become outstanding performers,” said Grange.
