JRC chairman promises inquiry after jockeys rail against stewards
Chairman of Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) Clovis Metcalfe has responded to the Jockeys’ Agents Association’s letter, acknowledging their requests for an immediate investigation of stewards involved in a recent hearing.
The Jockeys’ Agents Association, led by Donovan Wilson, is calling for a full investigation into the conduct of a panel of stewards who presided over a jockey’s hearing on August 12, 2025, which resulted in a raft of sanctions against riders, including suspensions and fines, and has sparked deep concerns within the jockeys’ community about the fairness and transparency of the stewards’ decision-making process.
In the letter to Metcalfe, the association demanded that the stewards in question be relieved of officiating duties with immediate effect, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The letter was accompanied by a petition signed by several agents and jockeys, showcasing the industry’s growing discontent with the current state of officiating at Caymanas Park.
The JRC, as the governing body responsible for ensuring honesty and integrity in the sport, will likely face intense scrutiny over its handling of the matter.
With the industry’s reputation hanging in the balance, the racing commission is expected to navigate the issue carefully if it is to maintain trust in its ability to govern the sport.
The JRC chairman assured that the matter will be given full and speedy attention.
“We have received a letter dated August 13, 2025 from the president of the Jockeys’ Agents Association of Jamaica and took special note of both requests calling for immediate investigation and suspension of pertinent re-panel steward from frontline with immediate effect. Special note was also made of the tone in which the letter was written.
“The JRC will continue to operate in a professional and well-structured manner and accordingly the association can rest assured that the matter will be given prompt attention and due process followed.
“And in this regard efforts are being made to schedule an appeal hearing for Wednesday next when the board will have the opportunity to hear from all involved from this incident,” Metcalfe said.
