Coaches see positives in Dixon’s loan move
REGGAE Boyz Assistant Coach Merron Gordon says Kaheim Dixon’s season-long loan from English Championship side Charlton Athletic to English Football League Two’s Crawley Town will be a boost to the young forward’s development.
“It’s not a perfect move but as long as he’s getting playing time it will benefit him,” Gordon says. “His club really likes him — we got a report from them just last week saying so — but they feel he’s not quite ready yet. But at the same time, they don’t want to sell him, therefore they loaned him for playing time so, hopefully, he can improve and come back to them or even move on to a next club or even a bigger club.”
Gordon says consistent match action is vital for any player’s growth, both for club and country.
“More playing time will only help him grow and maintain match fitness,” he says. “If the national team calls on him, he will be in a much better place than if he were sitting on the bench. Kaheim is an excellent youth. Since his schoolboy days at Clarendon College he has kept developing, and hopefully he can become a main player for us in the near future.”
Dixon, who turns 21 on October 20, also played for Arnett Gardens in the 2023–24 Jamaica Premier League before moving to Charlton. He made just three appearances for the Championship club last season and has scored three goals in 18 appearances for the Reggae Boyz.
Former Clarendon College Head Coach Lenworth Hyde, who guided Dixon during his high school career, also supports the move.
“He is not getting enough playing time at Charlton so I think it’s a good move to go somewhere where he can play regularly,” Hyde said. “The more games he plays, the more he will improve and people will see his true potential.
“It will also help the national programme because a regularly playing Kaheim Dixon will be an even better asset to Jamaica.”
Crawley Town is still searching for its first win of the League Two season after two matches.
