George Wright nominated to contest Westmoreland Central seat
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate for Westmoreland Central, George Wright, arrived with supporters in tow at the Independence Park nomination centre on Monday.
Wright was nominated to contest the seat by the JLP months after being welcomed back into the flock in February.
Wright beat Dwayne Vaz for the seat in 2020 and managed to hold on to it in a 2021 by-election as an independent candidate, after he resigned from the JLP amid national outrage over domestic violence allegations.
Wright had been embroiled in controversy in April 2021 after a man was seen in a video hitting a woman with a stool.
Neither Wright nor the woman, Tannisha Singh, whom he later married, confirmed that they were the individuals in the video, but both filed separate reports with the police. The police investigation was later dropped.
When the JLP welcomed him back in February, the party said its Membership Committee had recommended that Wright be re-admitted, and this was accepted by the Standing Committee.
The party also cited mitigating actions on Wright’s part, including counselling.
