Viral TikTok post lands woman in court
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A viral TikTok video landed Sabrina Messam before the St James Parish Court last Wednesday to answer charges of malicious communication.
Messam is accused of posting, on July 14, a video in which she named the complainant in full, attaching his TikTok username as well as a photo from his page. It is alleged that in the video she also issued threatening remarks toward the complainant and his family, and referenced a business they had shared, drawing immediate attention online.
The fallout was said to have been swift. Following the post, several individuals allegedly reached out to the complainant, and some made derogatory comments about him in response to the video. Concerned about the escalating situation, the complainant reported the matter to the police, resulting in Messam’s arrest.
As read out by the clerk of court on Wednesday, Messam’s defence under caution was that the complainant had wronged her and after receiving no recourse from the police she aired the issue on social media. Her caution statement also indicated that she had no idea one video would land her before the courts.
Also during Wednesday’s court sitting, the clerk revealed that several crucial documents were still outstanding, including the Communication Forensics and Cybercrime Division report for the phones seized from Messam, the chain of custody statement, and text messages exchanged between her and the complainant.
Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton set the case for mention on October 8 and extended Messam’s bail.
