Long shot Hail The Queen gallops to victory in Restricted Allowance contest
HAIL The Queen, a four-year-old chestnut filly owned and trained by Ian Roberts, pulled off a stunning upset at Caymanas Park on Saturday, August 16, 2025. She defied odds of 21-1 to win the opening event on the day — a $780,000 Restricted Allowance IV event for four-year-olds and upward over one mile (1,600m).
As the gates burst open jockey Dick Cardenas didn’t hesitate — he catapulted Hail The Queen to the front, setting a blistering pace. Design Diva, piloted by Garvin Harris; Wicked Cassie with Robert Halledeen aboard; and
Train of Thought ridden by Dane Dawkins, were hot on her heels as they approached the seven-furlong (1,400m) mark.
Hail The Queen continued to command the field down the backstretch, extending her lead at the half-mile marker as Wicked Cassie and Crown Chaser (Shane Ellis) made their move after the leader.
Wicked Cassie made a decisive move in deep stretch, surging past Hail The Queen. Yet, Cardenas’s urgings reignited Hail The Queen’s spark, and she launched a fierce counter-attack. With unyielding determination she powered past the tiring Wicked Cassie and crossed the finishing line a commanding 4¼ lengths clear. Wicked Cassie held on for second while Crown Chaser, ridden by Shane Ellis, secured third place. The final time for the race was 1:41.1 with splits of 23.4 x 47.2 x 1:14.0 x 1:27.3.
Hail The Queen is bred by Hedge Fund out of the Pat N Jac mare Seguro Oro. She was winning for the third time from 10 starts and has earned over $1.3 million in Stakes.
