Education minister promises teachers update on ‘big’ issue Wednesday
HANOVER, Jamaica — Education Minister Dr Dana Morris Dixon has hinted that she has good news for the country’s educators, telling the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) she will be providing them with updates on Wednesday.
“I am speaking tomorrow and I promise you that you will hear some things you want to hear and I will give you an update on the things you want to know about, including the big one. So, I promise you that for tomorrow,” stated Morris Dixon.
She was addressing the JTA’s 61st Annual Conference awards ceremony held at the Princess Grand Hotel in Green Island in Hanover late Tuesday night.
During August 15 wage talks, the Ministry of Finance had presented a four-year offer of zero per cent in year one, and 2.5 per cent for each of the remaining three years, resulting in a walk-out by JTA representatives.
On Monday during the investiture ceremony for president of the 25,000-member strong organisation its president Mark Malabver argued that the JTA will not accept the government’s current salary offer and will remain steadfast on the issue until a liveable wage is offered. He also did not rule out the possibility of industrial action.
The education minister is expected to address the conference and field questions from teachers starting at 9:00 am on its final day.
