Crisis averted!
Dear Editor,
It appears that Jamaica is no longer in crisis mode, as indicated by the recent performance in the May/June 2025 examinations.
This is commendable as we have observed an increase in the percentage of passes across various subjects. Specifically, mathematics and English A have shown recovery, with pass rates of 85 per cent and 44 per cent, respectively, which is a positive trend that we must work hard to maintain.
The recovery we see is not a matter of chance, it is the result of careful planning and execution aimed at preparing students for their examinations, and we are now reaping the rewards. However, we still have work to do in terms of improving the quality of these passes.
While an increase in percentage passes is a step in the right direction, we must ask: How can we enhance the quality of the grades that students receive? One concerning trend is the low number of grade ones awarded in subjects such as social studies and religious education. This issue does not stem from a lack of preparation on the part of the students but rather highlights a disconnect between Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) markers and their interpretation of exam responses.
Therefore, we advocate the return of table marking by CSEC to promote collaboration and the sharing of ideas among markers. Simply grading exams in isolation for hours is a disservice to our children. Additionally, we need more workshops to help teachers and students adjust their responses to better meet CSEC standards, as evidence suggests that there is a gap in understanding.
As we continue on this road to recovery, let us commend the hard-working students and teachers for their achievements, which have contributed to progress both locally and regionally. This reflects our dedication and commitment to fostering world-class education. Let us retain best practices from the last academic year and build on them to further enhance education in Jamaica.
