THE BAILEY BLOW
JFF awaiting MRI report after Reggae Boyz winger gets injured in first Roma training session
The Reggae Boyz technical staff face a nervous 24 hours as they await word on AS Roma’s new winger Leon Bailey’s availability for World Cup Qualifiers next month after his injury.
After completing his medical on Tuesday, Bailey was officially unveiled as a Roma player on Wednesday, joining on a season-long loan from Aston Villa with an option to make the move permanent.
The 28-year-old winger, and his agent Craig Butler, met with manager Gian Piero Gasperini and was given the number 31 jersey, the same number he wore at Aston Villa.
However, his first day of training with his new teammates on Wednesday ended in frustration. Italian journalist Filippo Biafora confirmed with the Jamaica Observer that Bailey felt discomfort at the end of the training session and it was later revealed as a muscle problem.
Bailey is set to undergo an MRI this morning to see the full extent of the injury but it’s likely he will miss the club’s Serie A opener against Bologna on Saturday.
Biafora also told the Observer that Bailey could make his debut after the international break in September with initial fears being that he’ll be out for three weeks.
It means that Bailey, who has seven goals and seven assists in 39 international appearances, could miss Jamaica’s Concacaf World Cup Qualifying openers against Bermuda on September 5 and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) on September 9.
The Observer understands that the Jamaica Football Federation’s (JFF) medical staff will make contact with Roma after today’s MRI test and see whether Bailey will be available for the national senior men’s team next month.
It’s however understood that Bailey and his camp are relaxed about the situation as they believe it is a minor knock.
Jamaica Head Coach Steve McClaren is set to announce the squad for the Bermuda and T&T games on Friday, August 29.
Prior to the injury news, Butler expressed his excitement on social media about Bailey’s move to Roma.
“My son, this has been a hard road yet a good one,” Butler said. “Now we are in the beautiful city of Rome [which] bleeds of courage, history and honour. Represent them and AS Roma well with your heart.
“I have always believed that one day we would be here. We have gratitude and commitment to make the fans proud and happy. Looking forward to great things.”
