Jamaica end Junior Pan Am Games with 12 medals
KINGSTON, Jamaica —Jamaica added five medals on Friday’s final day of the Junior Pan American Games in Asuncion, Paraguay, including a gold and championship record 61.79m from Racquil Brodrick in the men’s discus throw.
Jamaica finished the five-day championships with 12 medals- four gold, four silver and four bronze, as they added three silver and a bronze on the final day.
Both 4x400m relay teams and discus thrower Christopher Young, won silver medals, while Chavez Penn rallied in the men’s triple jump to win the bronze with a personal best 16.44m (2.0m/s).
Broderick had an outstanding day with five of his six throws, all over 60.00m, breaking the championships record 61.08m in the second round as Young was second with 59.34m and Brazil’s Mateus Torres third with 58.73m.
The men’s relay team just avoided a collision between the Trinidad and Tobago team and the Guyana team on the second leg to make up for a poor start to take second.
The team of Omary Robinson, Jasauna Dennis, Kevin Bliss and Tyreece Hyman ran 3:06.59 seconds, well behind Brazil who won with 3:03.76 seconds with Puerto Rico third with 3:07.29 seconds, just ahead of Trinidad.
The women’s team lost a big lead and were beaten on the line by one hundredth of a second by Canada with the team of Shanque Williams, Oneika Brissett, Daynea Colstock and Shanakaye Anderson clocking 3:31.74 seconds.
Canada set a Games record 3:31.73 seconds, while Mexico finished third in 3:31.95 seconds, all under the previous record.
Penn got off to a slow start but got into the final eight with a wind-aided 16.02m (2.9m/s) in the third round then reeled off three jumps all over 16.24m to snatch a medal, while beating his previous best of 16.18m set in June.
Canadian Praise Aniamaka won with 16.94m (1.9m/s) while Brazil’s Felipe DaSilva was second with 16.74m (1.3m/s).
David Warmington was fifth in the 110m hurdles final in 13.98 seconds, while Matthew Sullivan fell just before he got to the finish line and ended eighth.
