Girvano steals the show in thrilling upset
IN a display of speed and agility, the Jason DaCosta-trained Girvano produced an electrifying run to upset his more-fancied stablemate Funcaandun in the $1.75-million Distinctly Irish Trophy feature on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Carrying a light impose of 46.0kgs (101 lb) with Jordan Barrett in the saddle, Girvano came from behind to catch top-weight Funcaandun (57.0kgs/126 lb), with Robert Halledeen in the saddle, in a thrilling finish.
The American-bred bay colt won the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) by a length, stopping the clock in 1:56.2.
Blue Vinyl (Dane Dawkins) finished third.
It was the second winner on the day for DaCosta as he closed the programme with 3-1 betting option Himaya (Shaheem Gordon).
Anthony Nunes had a good day at the races, saddling four winners on the programme.
Nunes’ winning horses consisted of Fernando, ridden by Raddesh Roman, in the fourth race; Platinum Princess, ridden by Shane Ellis, in the fifth race; Uncapture Empress, ridden by Roman, in the sixth race; and Enthusiasm, ridden by Dick Cardenas, in the eighth race.
Racing continues on Saturday.
