5 things to know about JPS’ VP of generation, Sameer Simms
Sameer Simms continues to make a significant impact on Jamaica’s energy sector after his recent appointment as vice president of generation at the Jamaica Public Service (JPS).
Prior to this, Simms served as director – generation operations planning and performance (GOPP) and has been contributing to the company’s growth and development for more than eight years.
A seasoned and strategic leader, Simms brings a deep passion for innovation, energy, and finance. He firmly believes in leveraging science to improve the quality of human life and envisions a cleaner, more resilient, and affordable energy future for Jamaica.
In his new role, Simms says he is committed to driving operational excellence across the generation fleet, advancing cleaner energy technologies, and strengthening the nation’s energy security. But for him, leading generation is about more than just power plants and megawatts — it’s about making smart decisions today to fuel Jamaica’s sustainable growth for tomorrow.
Here are five things you may not know about Sameer Simms:
1. He once wanted to be a pilot
As a boy, Simms says, he dreamt of flying commercial jets. Though life took him to the energy sector instead of cockpits, he still sees himself as “charting flight paths” — only now, it’s for Jamaica’s energy future.
2. A physics and math enthusiast
Simms’ love for numbers and science led him to pursue a double major in physics and mathematics at the University of the West Indies (UWI). He humorously refers to himself as a “Physicist dabbling in finance, business strategy, and energy.” Throughout his career, he has continued feeding this passion by teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at UWI.
3. Nature and travel are his escapes
When he’s not immersed in energy operations, you’ll likely find Simms by the beach, a river, or surrounded by Jamaica’s natural beauty. He says the island’s landscapes bring him the same sense of awe and inspiration as traveling abroad often sparking fresh, innovative ideas.
4. A music lover at heart
Simms has an eclectic taste in music, with a special love for reggae oldies. For him, music is more than just a soundtrack, it’s a way to unwind, reflect, and connect. Although he’s deeply passionate about music, he admits he wasn’t exactly gifted with the talents of singing or dancing.
5. Guided by family and purpose
Despite his demanding role, Simms remains grounded in his values. He’s deeply family-oriented and believes in living with purpose. For him, that means always keeping his loved ones in focus and making decisions that help create a better tomorrow — not just for his family, but for all Jamaicans.
