Asia Police Station hosts summer camp for youth
MANCHESTER, Jamaica — The Asia Police Station in southern Manchester hosted its annual non-residential summer camp from August 11–16, with more than 70 young participants under the theme “I Believe I Can Achieve Greatness.”
The camp was officially opened by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Elsa Smith, Administration Officer for the Manchester Division. It was organised by Inspector Seanene Steers, sub-officer in charge at the station, in partnership with several stakeholders, including the Jamaica Cooperative Credit Union, Gilead Lifestyle Centre, Sanitarius, Pusey Hill Pentecostal Church, Newport Open Bible, Bent’s Funeral Home, Hibbert Glass, and Sammy’s Bakery.
The six-day camp involved several activities and competitions, including baking, table etiquette, sewing, music, art and craft, games, guidance and counselling. An educational excursion to Port Royal and the Logos Hope book ship was among the highlights of the camp. Various departments also made presentations, including the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation (CTOC), Restorative Justice, and HEART Trust/NSTA.
At the closing ceremony, participants showcased talents they developed during the camp and were awarded for achievements in different categories. Special recognition was given to Hope-Ann and Faith Bent as “Most Disciplined,” while Ishmael Collins and Jayquawn Swaby were awarded as “Most Outstanding Musicians.” Swaby also received the title of “Most Creative” for designing the camp banner.
Back-to-school supplies were distributed courtesy of DSP Smith and Inspector P Johnson. Two participants are also set to sit the police entrance test at Manchester High School on August 19, which organisers said reflected the positive influence of the initiative.
