Tavares-Finson slams Campbell’s integrity lamp comment
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) representative on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), Tom Tavares-Finson KC, has dismissed a recent statement from the People’s National Party’s (PNP) General Secretary Dayton Campbell regarding the use of integrity lamps during voting.
Speaking on the matter, Tavares-Finson pointed to comments made by Campbell at a public meeting, where he indicated that he intended to arm PNP indoor agents with integrity lamps to scrutinise the voter ID cards of potential voters.
“Of course, Dr Campbell, as a member of the Electoral Commission, should know better than this,” Tavares-Finson said. “No worker, PNP or JLP, would be entitled to walk into a polling station with an integrity lamp.”
He stressed that there is only one integrity lamp in the polling station and it is provided by the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) and is operated by the presiding officer.
“Clearly Campbell’s statement is meant only to sow discord and misinformation amongst the potential voters of the country,” he added. “It ought to be ignored.”
