From setback to snapshot: Photographer’s dream gets a $100,000-boost from Digicel
ONLY days after losing money he had saved to purchase a new camera, Clarendon-based photographer Darrien Seville received a call that provided immediate relief.
The 35-year-old Seville had just topped up a Digicel seven-day plan when he received a call that he won $100,000 in the Digicel ‘Remix D’Summa’ promotion, a moment he describes as both surreal and a blessing in disguise.
“I was in disbelief because I just lost $140,000 I was going to use to buy another camera, and now I’m getting back $100,000 of it just days apart,” he said smiling with relief and excitement.
Seville’s journey into photography has been anything but smooth. He discovered his passion at age 27 and threw himself into chasing opportunities wherever he could find them, often taking on smaller jobs to hone his craft and build experience.
His first major gig in Kingston seemed like a breakthrough, paying $50,000. The reality, however, was sobering as once he factored in his expenses, he soon realised his sacrifice outweighed his earnings.
“At the time I feel like it was a lot of money because is the most I’ve made while doing this but then fare and ting alone cost me $47,000 of the $50,000 I made,” recalled Seville.
Instead of quitting, he adjusted, taking on $3,000 or $4,000 jobs which provided him with some extra cash.
The support from his circle also kept him going, as they believed he showed great potential to turn this into a career, even pooling together to buy him his first camera.
“They told me I have the talent, just nuh have the tools to make it happen so they gave me my start,” Seville reflected.
That belief paid off. Today, his photography not only sustains him but has allowed him to reach milestones he once thought were out of reach, like purchasing a vehicle of his own making his commutes easier.
When he lost his hard-earned savings, Seville thought his chance to finally upgrade his camera had slipped away, which made his win Digicel Remix D’Summa promotion even more meaningful.
“You see these things happening and don’t always think you can be part of it, and now I am,” he stated beaming with pride.
Digicel Jamaica’s Public Relations Manager and Marketing Business Lead Brithney Clarke said, “Darrien’s story reflects the creativity and drive we see in so many of our customers. It’s exciting to witness him using this win to grow his craft and share his talent with a wider audience, a true example of turning ambition into action.”
Seville plans to use his $100,000 to buy a new camera, which will help him grow his business, dive deeper into videography and content creation as he focuses on building his brand and taking steps to develop himself as a creative entrepreneur.
For those hoping for their own timely boost, Digicel’s Remix D’Summa promotion is still underway.
Digicel customers are encouraged to participate before it ends on September 15, 2025, for a chance to win a share of $20 million in cash and prizes.
