Defining four winners for trainer Anthony ‘Baba’ Nunes
Former three-time champion trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes stole the show on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
Nunes’s achieved the rare feat of saddling four winners on the 10-race programme, leaving the crowd in awe.
The winning quartet consisted of Fernando, ridden by Raddesh Roman, in the fourth race; Platinum Princess, ridden by Shane Ellis, in the fifth race; Uncaptured Empress, ridden by Roman, in the sixth race; and
Enthusiasm, ridden by Dick Cardenas, in the eighth race.
“It is obviously nice to win one, much less four, and so let’s hope that we have more to come,” Nunes told the
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
With his eyes trained on another championship, Nunes believes his barn is primed for a strong 2026 season.
“We are ahead of the game to be honest, we really thought to set ourselves up for 2026 to have a shot at the championship. We are way behind Jason DaCosta [this season] again, but once you have the Mouttet Mile as a race where there is a chance not just me but anybody who has a Mouttet Mile winner has the chance of winning a trainer’s or owner’s championship because the purse is so big. It is good for racing,” Nunes said.
As Nunes looks to the future, he’s focused on the thrill of the ride.
“I like to win races, and so if the championship comes, that’s great. It is not like I have never won one, you know; we have won three already.”
With a winning smile, Nunes added, “I just want to enjoy my racing, and if I win a championship again, that’s great, and if not, it is also great.”
