Nelson close to securing second championship title at Century Mile
DANE Nelson, a four-time champion Jamaican jockey, is on the verge of claiming his second championship title at Century Mile in Edmonton, Canada. Despite a relatively quiet weekend with only one winner, Nelson’s consistent performance has kept him in the lead, seven wins ahead of his nearest rival, Natera Keithon.
Nelson’s lone winner over the weekend came aboard Sir Bregovic, trained by Gonzalo Anderson, in the sixth race on Friday, August 22, 2025. The victory was a thrilling one, with Sir Bregovic edging out Gem Quality by a head in a time of 1:09.3.
With this win Nelson’s tally stands at 37 winners while Keithon has 30 wins and Rasheed Hughes, 26. The championship is set to conclude on September 13, and Nelson is determined to emerge victorious.
“That’s always the aim — to win as many races as possible and win the championship,” Nelson said in an interview.
Nelson’s impressive career statistics include 475 wins, 427 second-place finishes, and third 393 times from 2,449 mounts, with earnings of CAN$5,644,492.
Nelson, who has also won a jockey’s championship at Century Downs, credits his success to hard work and continuous learning.
“It is always nice to win races, and this will build my career. The experience is great, I am still learning and I will continue to do the hard work to win more races,” Nelson said.
