Police announce traffic changes for JLP mass meeting in St Catherine

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The police are advising the public of the following traffic changes to facilitate the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) mass meeting to be held at the Old Harbour roundabout, St Catherine on Sunday, August, 31.

The following traffic changes will take effect from 8:00 am to 12:00 midnight on Sunday, August 31.

At 8:00 am on Sunday,  the eastern section of the Old Harbour Road roundabout will be closed to allow for infrastructure set-up. The western section of the roundabout will be operated as two-way traffic.

Motorists travelling southerly along the Spanish Town Bypass, proceeding easterly or westerly, will keep right of the roundabout.

Motorists travelling from Wellington Street towards the Spanish Town Bypass will not be able to access the roundabout; hence they will turn right at Cumberland Road and then left onto Williams Street and proceed on to the Spanish Town bypass.

Motorists travelling from Old Harbour Road proceeding easterly along the Spanish Town Bypass will keep right of the roundabout.

At 12:00 midday, the following roads will be closed, and traffic will be diverted.

Diversion Point 1: The Spanish Town Bypass travelling westerly will be closed at Duncans Pen Road.

Small units will be diverted through Duncans Pen Road to access Cromarty Road onto Old Harbour Road.

Large vehicles such as tractor-trailers will be diverted right onto Windsor Road, and then straight onto Burke Road, left onto Wellington Street, right on Cumberland Road, left at Brunswick Avenue and proceed left or right onto Walks Road.

Diversion Point 2: The road leading from the PJ Patterson Toll heading towards the Old Harbour Road roundabout will be closed at the Cromarty Road traffic light.

Motorists will be diverted left onto Cromarty Road to access Old Harbour Road.

Motorists going towards the centre of Spanish Town or toward Central Village will turn right toward Windsor Road at Cromarty Road.

Diversion Point 3: Old Harbour Road will be closed at the intersection of McVickers Lane.

Small units wishing to go easterly will be diverted through Cromarty Road to access the PJ Patterson Toll or to proceed along Duncans Pen Road to access the Spanish Town Bypass.

Tractor-trailers and other large units proceeding easterly will be diverted left onto Featherbed Lane across onto Job Lane, onto Brunswick Avenue, onto Young Street, then straight onto Burke Road via Twickenham Park main Road, onto Nelson Mandela Highway.

Diversion Point 4: Spanish Town Bypass at the intersection of St John’s Road.

Motorists proceeding from St John’s Road may also drive across Spanish Town Bypass, continue onto St John’s Road to Young Street and turn right towards the Town Centre.

All units travelling along Walks Road from the direction of the Bog Walk Gorge, proceeding easterly, will be diverted left onto Brunswick Avenue at the intersection of Brunswick Avenue and Walks Road.

Closures:

The intersection of Wellington Street and Cumberland Road will be closed to vehicular traffic.

The intersection of Wellington Street and Manchester Street will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Designated parking areas:

Spanish Town Bypass between Duncans Pen Road and March Pen Road, only on the hard shoulder;

Homestead Community Centre; Homestead All –Age School, and the St Catherine South Central Constituency Office.

The Spanish Town Bypass between Tyre Warehouse and St John’s Road on both sides of the bypass in the two open lots prepared for parking.

No parking will be allowed beyond the Tyre Warehouse.

JUTC buses and other buses travelling from the easterly side of Spanish Town, transporting supporters to the venue, will travel along the Spanish Town Bypass, turn right onto Windsor Road and straight on to Burke Road, left on to Wellington Street, right on Cumberland Road, left onto Brunswick Avenue, and left onto Spanish Town Bypass to the parking lot.

JUTC buses and other buses travelling from the west will turn left at Featherbed Lane, then right onto St John’s Road, right onto Spanish Town Bypass into the parking lot.

Buses and other vehicles using the PJ Patterson Highway to the venue will turn right at Cromarty Road, left on Windsor Road, straight on to Burke Road, left on to Wellington Street, right on to Cumberland Road, straight on to Brunswick Avenue, left on Job Lane, left on to Spanish Town bypass and left into the parking lot.

Buses and other vehicles using the Edward Seaga Highway will exit at Angels Toll, turn left on Walks Road, straight on to the Spanish Town Bypass and left into the parking lot.

No parking will be allowed on any roadways leading to or from Old Harbour Road roundabout.

Motorists are asked to use alternative routes where practicable. Motorists are also asked to obey the instructions of the police.
