Seniors flaunt their skill in thrilling domino tournament
THE National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB)/National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) domino tournament was again deemed a major success, bringing together people from across the north-western region of Jamaica.
The event took place at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s Falmouth Office in Trelawny on Thursday, and it was clear that playing the game is a beloved pastime among the island’s seniors.
According to Tina Porter, tournament director, the event was a great way to get the gentlemen out playing together and engaged.
“Domino is a big deal in Trelawny and so it’s always good to get the gentlemen out playing together — and they were fully engaged and they really enjoyed themselves,” she said.
One of the highlights of the tournament was the participation of an 89-year-old champion from last year who showed no signs of slowing down, despite his advanced age.
“He was the champion from last year and it was great to have him playing this year. We hope to have him next year again when he is 90 years old,” she said.
Porter emphasised the benefits of dominoes for seniors, highlighting its ability to stimulate the mind and promote mental activity.
“Domino overall, to me, is a health active as it stimulates the mind; it is [also] a mental active, and so that’s for everyone across the board. And so, can you imagine the seniors in their advanced stage still coming out, the reading, the matching, and getting the game done?” she explained.
Earley Allen and Lloyd Young emerged victorious in the domino tournament, showcasing their skill and strategy.
Allen attributed their win to the cognitive benefits of playing the game.
“Well, playing domino really helps you with your remembrance and it also makes you concentrate better. You have to remember the cards that your partner is playing, what cards he doesn’t have, the same thing with the opponents, and that really helps you focus more,” he explained.
Allen also appreciated the social aspect of the tournament, adding: “It is also good to see these players, who we have known for a long time, get together and have some fun.”
Humbert Davis, president of NADB, noted that dominoes is more than just a game.
“Dominoes isn’t just about laying tiles, it’s about building bonds, sharpening minds, and creating unforgettable moments that bring joy to our communities,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
