‘The best poll is the poll on September 3,’ says Tufton
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Campaign Committee Chairman Dr Christopher Tufton has urged party workers and supporters to prepare for Wednesday’s General Election despite one national opinion poll suggesting that it will defeat the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) convincingly in those polls.
At the JLP’s mass meeting in Spanish Town, St Catherine on Sunday, Tufton said there were many opinions on the pending results of the elections.
“A see one poll that say we a runaway victors, and another poll that say we inna a statistical dead heat. Don’t get carried away by polls. We know that the Jamaican people believe in the Jamaica Labour Party. Election is where it matters. The best poll is the poll on the third of September at 5 o’clock when we check up the votes and we return the Jamaica Labour Party to victory and the next five years,” Tufton stated.
The JLP is on a high heading into the polls following Friday’s release of the Nationwide/Bluedot polls that showed 46 per cent of the 1,511 persons polled indicating that they will vote for the governing party when compared to 33 per cent for the PNP.
In contrast, the RJRGLEANER-commissioned Don Anderson poll gave the PNP the edge in its release on Sunday. It said that 37.6 per cent of the 1,010 individuals polled say they would vote for the Opposition compared to 34.5 per cent for the JLP.
However, the Gleaner-commissioned Don Anderson poll released on Sunday shows the PNP pulling ahead of the JLP, polling 37.6 per cent among registered voters, to 34.5 per cent for the governing party.
In closing his presentation, Tufton appealed to all Jamaicans, particularly those watching at home, to vote for the JLP.
“The election is a tale of two [political] organisations – the PNP that has a legacy of debt, taxes and failed promises [versus] the JLP that has not raised taxes, reduced your debt, has controlled crime, and has created jobs over the last nine years under this Andrew Holness government,” said Tufton.
“It seems to me that all well-thinking Jamaicans will recognise that the choice is clear. The Jamaica Labour Party has done more for the people of Jamaica, for their families, and for this country than the PNP has ever done for all the years that they have had the opportunity to lead this country,” he added.
To those undecided voters, Tufton said they should ask themselves whether they will be better off in the next five years under the JLP, based on what it has done for the country over the past nine years.
