Racing look to gather momentum against Waterhouse in JPL
Racing United will hope to prove their 5-1 thrashing of Arnett Gardens in last weekend’s opening round of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) was no fluke when they take on Waterhouse FC at Drewsland Stadium today at 4:00 pm.
Both teams won their opening games as Waterhouse beat Molynes United 2-0 and share the early lead on the tables with three other clubs, including Portmore United and Chapelton Maroons, both of whom will also be playing today.
Also today, Chapelton go after their second win when they take on Harbour View in the first game of a double header at Stadium East. Portmore United are also seeking back-to-back wins and Dunbeholden FC and newly promoted Spanish Town Police will hope to win their first game.
Three more games will be played on Monday. Arnett Gardens will host defending champions Cavalier, while there will be a double header at the Montego Bay Sports Complex as Mount Pleasant meets Molynes United in the first game followed by Montego Bay United against Treasure Beach.
Both Racing and Waterhouse won one game against each other last season with one draw, with Racing surprising Waterhouse 3-0 in their first meeting, also at Drewsland. Racing Head Coach Anthony Patrick will be hoping lightning will strike twice.
Racing play a high octane style of football and caught Arnett Gardens flat on Monday, racing to a 3-0 lead after just 11 minutes, and Waterhouse must be ready from the first whistle.
Giovanni Cunningham led the Racing team, scoring a double against Arnett Gardens, one of the best defensive teams from last season, and is expected to lead them again today.
Waterhouse just missed the play-offs last season and will hope to get off to a fast start and build a foundation on which to work. They will hope Colorado Murray, who scored on his return last week, will be able to lead them to three points.
Waterhouse won their third-round game against Racing at Drewsland 1-0.
Chapelton prevailed against a Tivoli Gardens team that showed up with just 13 players last week and faces a Harbour View team that held a slow starting Cavalier 0-0 and will be hoping momentum is on their side.
The veteran Leaughn Williams led Chapelton with a double and will be seeking a third-straight win over the east Kingston team who they beat twice last season after losing their first game between the two teams in the first round.
For the past few seasons Harbour View have found goals hard to come by but will hope to get their first win today.
Portmore got the better of Dunbeholden in their St Catherine derby last weekend and will be confident going up against Tivoli, who, up to last weekend, had not been able to field their best team.
Dunbeholden, meanwhile, will hope to avoid being Spanish Town Police’s first casualty in the Premier League and will start favourites to get three points.
