Rose among the thorns in St Mary Central
PORT MARIA, St Mary — Business consultant Rose Rhea Cargill has thrown her hat in the ring to represent the Jamaica Progressive Party (JPP) in St Mary Central in Wednesday’s general election. According to Cargill she chose to enter the race because of increasing apathy among voters.
“I have seen voter confidence decline over the past two general elections with an estimated 63 per cent uncommitted voters on the voters list. I want to present another option for the constituents of St Mary Central,” she told Observer Online.
She sees the faith-based three-year-old JPP as the party that can make a difference.
“This party comes at the right time. It is established that third parties are not successful in Jamaica, but I hope to [change] that. They know that I am a servant leader that is ready to serve, one whom they can share their concerns with and is ready to work alongside them to make their constituency a place where they can live, work and grow their family,” said Cargill.
Her game plan is to attract individuals who have never voted before and now wish to do so, based on faith.
Speaking with Observer Online recently, Cargill outlined plans for the constituency if elected.
“I would create effective youth engagement programmes for all youth, including after-school engagement, skills training and entrepreneurship development. For health, I would look at a 24/7 health centre in each district. [I would look at] having green spaces for families and the community; a robust farming network which would include transportation, storage and security against praedial larceny; and apart from having systems for better road maintenance and water supplies, I would ensure that there are regular constituency clinics and town hall meetings,” she said.
