Vote PNP, Mark Golding tells Labourites
Says he will be prime minister for all Jamaicans
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Stating that he is committed to serving all Jamaicans, People’s National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding is urging the electorate — including supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) — to vote PNP in the September 3 General Election.
“Comrades, on Wednesday I ask you, [and] all the undecided voters — even the Labourites — put your X beside the head and return Jamaica to decency. Return Jamaica to be a country that the whole of the world can look on and say, ‘That’s the model Caribbean pearl!’ ” he urged as he brought the curtains down on a PNP mass rally in Sam Sharpe Square, St James, Sunday night.
In his address before a sea of cheering supporters, Golding pointed to what he said is the PNP’s history of listening to the people.
“Comrades, it is with great humility and a great sense of purpose that I put myself forward to become the next prime minister of Jamaica. I dedicate myself to serving the people of Jamaica, all of the people of Jamaica, and in particular those who need the help of a caring government. A People’s National Party Government that knows about the struggles of the people and that has established itself from 1938 for the listening of the people,” stated Golding.
He said he will maintain the tradition.
“I commit myself to continue that mission and to help move Jamaica from stagnation, from hopelessness, move on to a better quality of life for us all, higher levels of economic growth. And Jamaica will be moving up with the PNP to a better place,” added the PNP president.
Golding also pledged that should the PNP be given the chance to form the next government there will be consequences for improper behaviour, and the party will lead with integrity.
“To the people of Jamaica, I pledge to you that the Government that I will lead will be one that is accountable to the people, that listens to the people, that is transparent in how we operate, and that ensures that the resources of the people are used solely for the benefit and upliftment of the people, not for friend and company, not for personal enrichment,” he said.
During his stint at the podium PNP General Secretary Dr Dayton Campbell called on supporters to be vigilant and stay clear of anyone attempting to buy their votes or in any way undermine the democratic process.
“Every single Comrade that is listening to me: There is no time to sleep; we are going to sleep on Thursday night. From here so [Sunday night] until Wednesday evening when polls close, every movement in your PD [polling division], you must know who in deh; what dem ah do in deh; what dem come ’bout. Be vigilant in your communities!” he thundered.
“People giving people something in exchange for their vote is a crime according to ROPA (Representation of the People Act). The PNP give you cellphone [so] follow back a dem and video them when they come inna the constituency. Get the evidence. Catch them red-handed, because this must be a free and fair election,” Dr Campbell said, adding that the journey is almost over and the best is yet to come.
