Another delay in cop hit-and-run case
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The committal hearing for Dillon Reid, the accused in the hit-and-run death of Constable Linroy Codner, has been pushed back yet again.
Reid, a 25-year-old resident of Blackshop district in St James, was charged on February 28 following a ruling from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Otherwise known as “CJ” or “Bulby”, he faces the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and is being represented by attorney-at-law Chumu Paris.
The matter had been set for a committal hearing on Wednesday; however, proceedings did not go ahead. The court was given no explanation for the delay. Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton has now fixed September 15 as the new hearing date. She extended Reid’s bail.
The case stems from a deadly encounter on Granville main road in St James on October 4, 2024. Police reported that Constable Codner, while on duty conducting a roadblock, signalled a white Toyota Probox to stop. Instead, the vehicle slowed momentarily before suddenly accelerating — slamming into Codner and hurling him over a cliff estimated to be between 50 and 70 feet deep.
Codner was rushed to hospital with multiple brain injuries and fought for his life for more than two weeks. He succumbed to his injuries on October 20.
Investigators say Reid fled the crash scene, abandoning the Probox in his neighbourhood. A manhunt was launched immediately. The following day Reid, accompanied by his attorney, surrendered to police.
