Nunes continues to make history
Anthony “Baba” Nunes, a former three-time champion conditioner, has just achieved another milestone in his illustrious career. On Saturday, August 3, 2025, he saddled his 1,400th career winner at Caymanas Park with King Piye taking the top spot in the fourth race.
King Piye, ridden by Anthony Allen, came off the pace to beat Brenda Boy by a head, going nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m). The race was a Restricted Allowance III contest for native-bred four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of four) and imported four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three).
But Nunes didn’t stop there. He went on to win two more races on the day, completing a three-timer and pushing his career wins to an impressive 1,402. His other winners on the day were Another One and Supremasi.
Another One, ridden by Dick Cardenas, won the seventh race, a Restricted Stakes contest for three-year-olds and upward over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight. Supremasi, ridden by Romario Spencer, took the $1.25-million O&S Tack Room Trophy feature over one mile (1,600m).
With this achievement, Nunes continued to solidify his position as one of the top trainers in Jamaica. Only two trainers have won more races than him: the late Wayne DaCosta with 2,290 wins and Philip Feanny with 2,155 wins. Nunes’ consistency and success have earned him a reputation as one of the best in the business.
