Trainer Lydia Anglin saddles first winner of 2025 season
TRAINER Lydia Anglin saddled her first winner for the 2025 racing season when her charge Lucy in the Sky won the third race on Saturday, August 30. It was her eighth start for the year for Anglin.
The race was an Optional Claiming ($700,000-$600,000) event for native-bred six-year-olds and upward (non-winners of four) and imported six-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over six furlongs (1,200m).
Ridden by Paul “Country” Francis, Lucy in the Sky got a good start at the break and quickly surrounded horses to take up the running approaching the half-mile (800m) turn. Curlin’s Flight (Raddesh Roman), Nakamura (Richie Shakes) and Turnonthelight (Evertte Clunis) trailed the leader going into the turn.
Approaching the distance, Lucy in the Sky opened up on rivals and looked like an easy winner at the top of the lane. Despite a late challenge from Nakamura in deep stretch, Lucy in the Sky proved too strong in the end, winning by 2¼ lengths. Finishing third was Turnonthelight with the final time recorded at 1:16.1
Lucy in the Sky is a four-year-old bay filly bred by Liquidity out of the Tapit mare Tap A Bay Yankee. She was winning for the fourth time from 34 starts.
