Boyz beat T&T at home to inch closer to WC berth
The Reggae Boyz took an important step in qualifying for next summer’s FIFA World Cup by securing their second-straight win in the final round of Concacaf World Cup qualifying on Tuesday night.
The national senior men’s team registered a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago at the National Stadium, keeping them top of Group B.
Striker Bailey Cadamarteri, in his home debut, sent the local fans into a frenzy by blasting one from close range in the 36th minute to give the Boyz the lead.
The win was sealed for Steve McClaren’s men in the 57th minute when midfielder Jon Russell fired home from 10 yards out.
Trinidad found the back of the net three times but all were disallowed for offside, including two overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR).
Jamaica remain sole leaders of Group B with six points, which means they are in pole position to qualify for the World Cup since only the group winner goes through automatically.
They have a two-point advantage over second-placed Curaçao who moved to four points with their 3-2 win over fourth-placed Bermuda.
Trinidad and Tobago sit third with one point.
The Reggae Boyz could confirm qualification next month with wins over Curaçao on October 10 and Bermuda on October 14.
