School bus driver didn’t commit 14 speeding infractions in one day, Ellington clarifies
MANAGING director of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) Owen Ellington clarified Tuesday that the driver who was called out for reckless driving on one of the new rural school buses via a social media post by Transport Minister Daryl Vaz did not commit all 14 speeding infractions in one day.
On Monday afternoon, Vaz, on his X account, uploaded a picture which highlighted a school bus driver who recorded 14 speeding violations in what many who interacted with the post assumed happened on a singular day.
The image also displayed that the trip date was Sunday, September 7, with the driver’s maximum speed reaching 57.2 m/h.
Vaz also posted that the driver would face action from authorities, as stakeholders in the new student bus system attempted to ensure that the highest standards of operations were maintained.
However, Ellington is clarifying that the driver, though culpable, did not carry out all 14 violations on Sunday.
In a statement to the Jamaica Observer, Ellington explained that the 14 speeding misdemeanours were recorded over the span of the week August 29 to September 7, and that no children were on board or affected during the hiccups.
In the meantime, Ellington shared that further investigation of the incident was underway to adequately come to a decision regarding the driver. Some media reports Tuesday suggested that the driver’s services could be terminated.
The Government’s rural school bus programme, with 60 buses, was deployed across all parishes on the first day of the academic year on Monday.
“We just continue to pray that we can work out all of the tweaks that need to be made to make the system more efficient, safe, and affordable,” Vaz said in a media release.
