Commuters left stranded as oveturned tanker continues to block Trelawny roadway
TRELAWNY, Jamaica- Commuters, including students and hotel workers, were left stranded late Friday after an overturned petrol tanker continued to block a section of the North Coast Highway that passes the community of Carey Park, rendering it impassable since morning.
Employees from nearby hotels were seen walking along the roadway as emergency crews worked at the scene.
Firefighters from St Ann, Trelawny, and St James, along with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, have been on site since shortly after 8:00 am, according to Superintendent Roland Walters, head of the Trelawny Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade.
Carey Park lies near communities such as Stewart Castle, Duncans Hill, Duncans, and Spicy Hill. Traffic is being diverted as motorists traveling from Duncans toward Falmouth are routed to Rock via Clark’s Town, and drivers from the opposite direction are advised to use the same detour.
A source told Observer Online that a wrecker initially dispatched was too small to move the tanker; a larger unit is reportedly en route.
